OLED image retention vs burn-in: a safe visual check.

Understand temporary OLED image retention and permanent uneven wear, then check the panel with brief low-gray patterns and sensible brightness precautions.

A faint logo or interface shape on an OLED screen is not automatically permanent burn-in. Temporary retention and near-black panel variation can look similar, so start with short, moderate-brightness checks.

Retention can fade; burn-in describes persistent uneven wear

Temporary image retention is a short-lived afterimage that can follow static or high-contrast content. Its visibility may reduce after normal varied use. Burn-in is persistent uneven aging: areas that displayed different content for long periods no longer match the surrounding panel.

A browser test cannot prove how permanent an image is or measure remaining panel life. It can only help you observe whether a shape remains visible across controlled colors and after the original content is gone.

Gray is usually more revealing than maximum brightness

Low and middle gray fields often reveal interface outlines, tint, or vertical bands without the stress of a sustained bright white screen. Open the OLED burn-in test at moderate brightness and spend only a few seconds on each pattern.

Compare several gray levels and muted colors. A shape that appears only at one near-black level may relate to uniformity or panel compensation behavior rather than a clearly visible mark in normal content.

  • Lower brightness before starting.
  • Do not leave any static test pattern running unattended.
  • Check the same area in normal video and desktop content.
  • Stop if the panel or device becomes unusually warm.

Do not use a test page as a repair loop

Rapid color cycling and long bright patterns are often described online as burn-in fixes. They cannot reverse permanent uneven aging and may add unnecessary usage. DisplayCheck intentionally provides observation patterns, not repair claims.

If your display offers a compensation or pixel-refresh feature, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Repeatedly forcing maintenance cycles without a reason may not be recommended for that model.

Check whether the mark matters in real use

Return to the content and brightness you normally use. Record whether the shape is visible only in a dark room on a selected gray slide or whether it remains distracting in games, films, and desktop work.

For broader tint, patches, or vertical bands, compare the screen uniformity test. That helps separate a recognizable static-content outline from general panel variation.
