A high-refresh monitor does not automatically run at its advertised maximum. The operating system, GPU, port, cable, resolution, display mode, power state, and application all participate in the active timing.
Start with the operating-system display setting
Open the system’s advanced display settings, select the correct monitor, and verify the chosen refresh rate. New displays are often left at 60 Hz after connection, a driver update, or a resolution change.
If you have more than one screen, identify them before changing a value. It is easy to read or modify the refresh rate for the laptop panel while the browser window is on the external monitor.
Check the complete signal path
A monitor may support its maximum refresh rate only through selected DisplayPort or HDMI inputs, at specific resolutions, or with a feature enabled in its on-screen menu. The GPU output, adapter, dock, cable, and display input must all support the intended mode.
Bandwidth demand rises with resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and chroma format. If the desired option is missing, test a direct connection and consult the official specifications for every device in the chain.
- Select the monitor’s native resolution first.
- Avoid an unverified adapter or dock during diagnosis.
- Check whether the monitor input has a compatibility or high-bandwidth mode.
- Update the GPU driver using the hardware maker’s supported method.
Duplicate display mode can impose a shared limit
When two displays mirror the same desktop, the operating system may choose a timing supported by both. Switch temporarily to an extended desktop or test the high-refresh monitor by itself to see whether the higher option becomes available.
Battery-saving modes, remote-desktop sessions, virtual machines, and some capture devices can also alter the presentation path. Test locally with the browser in the foreground.
Use browser timing as a confirmation, not the source of truth
After the system setting is correct, move the window to the target monitor and run the refresh rate test. Close heavy tabs and keep the page visible while it samples animation callbacks.
