How to use the black screen
- Set your device to a comfortable brightness and choose Open fullscreen. Move the window to the monitor you want to view first.
- Use Hide controls for an uninterrupted field. Move the pointer, tap, or press a key to reveal the controls again. Use the named color buttons or arrow keys to switch colors.
- Select Close screen or press Escape to leave. If your browser refuses fullscreen, the field stays usable inside the window; browser bars may remain visible.
Choose your own shade with Custom color, or enter a three- or six-digit HEX value and select Apply color. The preview and fullscreen field update together. Switch back to a named preset using the fullscreen color buttons.
A blank black screen on demand
Use this page for an intentional dark field or a quiet presentation background. The device remains on and applications continue running. It is different from a computer that unexpectedly goes black: this tool does not troubleshoot crashes, power loss, cables, or boot failures. Close the field to return to the page.
Observe bright points and LCD glow
A black field can make persistent bright points visible. Use a comfortable brightness and compare the same position on white and RGB fields. LCD backlights, reflections, and viewing angle can make black appear gray. For edge glow, follow the backlight bleed test and its guidance on distinguishing leakage from IPS glow; maximum brightness is not necessary for an everyday-use comparison.
Black is not a contrast measurement
OLED displays do not use an LCD backlight, but a black page alone cannot identify every display technology or certify black levels. It also contains no shadow-detail steps. Use the black level test for near-black clipping, and avoid interpreting a phone camera’s brightened photo as a measurement of what your eyes see.
What this color field cannot measure
The page requests #000000 (RGB 0, 0, 0). Browser color handling, device settings, ambient light, and the panel affect what you see. A uniform field is a visual aid; it cannot measure color accuracy, luminance, contrast ratio, gamut coverage, or physical response time. Screenshots cannot document a physical pixel defect; a photo can record a location, but its exposure is not a measurement.
On phones and tablets, fullscreen availability varies by browser and device. The window fallback remains usable, but cannot remove system bars or cover an area reserved by the operating system. Use the larger preview for a plain background, and a focused test for a specific display question.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a black screen test or a computer repair tool?
It displays a solid black field for visual observation. It cannot diagnose a computer that went black by itself, measure contrast ratio, or repair a display.
Why does my full black screen still glow?
LCD backlighting, room reflections, picture settings, and viewing angle may contribute. Compare at normal brightness and read the backlight bleed versus IPS glow guide before treating glow as a defect.
Can I choose a custom color instead of black?
Yes. Use Custom color to choose a shade, or enter a three- or six-digit HEX value and select Apply color. The preview and fullscreen field use the selected color. The named preset remains available in the fullscreen controls.
