Display P3 can represent some more saturated colors than sRGB, especially in red and green regions. That wider range is useful only when the content, application, operating system, profile, and display all interpret the color values correctly.
A color space gives numbers a defined meaning
RGB values such as 255, 0, 0 are incomplete without a color space. sRGB and Display P3 define different primaries, so the same-looking numeric triplet can represent a different physical target.
Most web content has historically targeted sRGB. Display P3 is increasingly used for photos, design work, and supported web colors, but a wide-gamut panel does not make ordinary sRGB content more accurate by simply stretching it.
Why sRGB content can look oversaturated
If sRGB values are sent directly to a wide-gamut display without correct color management, familiar colors can appear too vivid. A managed application uses the content color space and display profile to map the intended appearance.
Display modes labelled vivid, native, or wide may deliberately expand color. For ordinary web content, compare them with an sRGB or standard mode before concluding that the wider-looking result is more accurate.
What a browser P3 comparison can show
The Display P3 gamut test checks CSS color support and places selected P3 colors beside sRGB fallbacks. A visible difference suggests the active browser path can preserve at least some wider values.
The broader color gamut test adds comparison patterns and capability indicators. Neither page measures the display’s physical P3 coverage, gamut volume, chromaticity, or Delta E. Those require a colorimeter or spectrophotometer and suitable software.

- A visible difference does not prove accurate P3 reproduction.
- No visible difference can result from clamping, an sRGB-only panel, or the active display mode.
- The correct gamut is the one intended by the content and workflow.
Check smoothness and neutrality separately
Gamut does not explain every color problem. Use the sRGB test for standard primaries and neutral steps. Use the gradient test for tonal smoothness and read what causes color banding if transitions break into visible steps.
For color-critical work, confirm the operating-system profile and calibrate with measurement hardware. Visual browser patterns remain useful for obvious configuration differences, not objective certification.
